The traditional custodians of the land, the Anangu, believe the landscape was created at the beginning of time by their ancestors and their descendants have been protecting the sacred lands for thousands of generations since.
Encompassing World Heritage-listed Uluru and Kata Tjuta National Park, the Red Centre contains distinctive desert fauna and many rare species of birds and animals and has a remarkable geological history.
It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve seen a picture of Uluru, nothing prepares you for seeing the real thing for yourself. Once you stand at its base, touch it and watch it, you will understand the mythical power of Uluru for Aboriginal people – and why it’s also an important icon of Australia.
A relatively short distance of a few hundred kilometres away is the Watarrka National Park (known as Kings Canyon), an enormous chasm cleaving deep into the earth. This has been home to the Luritja people for more than 20,000 years.
