The coastline

We’re the world’s largest island continent so we have a lot of coastline! About 37,000 kilometres of it!

Because we’re a big country, our coastal environment is also diverse. It includes gorgeous white beaches, rocky and sandy headlands, precious eco-systems, rainforests, mangroves, marine life including whales and dolphins, small islands and towns, cities and coastal communities.

One of the highlights of the Australian coastline is the world famous Great Barrier Reef which is the largest reef on earth. It extends for over 2,000 kilometres and is made up of about 3,000 individual reefs. The Great Barrier Reef has been designated a World Heritage Area and contains over 700 tropical islands.

Australia is also a significant producer of minerals.
